I found this wire working mandrel set in Michaels for a very reasonable price and I had a 40% off coupon! The mandrels are made from heavy duty plastic and are round, oval, square and triangular shaped. There is a handle that can used on any of the mandrels. What I like about this tool is that it is lightweight and easy to hold. What I don't like is that the plastic bends too much to stay secure in a vise. If you are making something that requires two hands, the mandrel wiggled around a bit too much. I was able to rest it on my work table and make it work. And I really liked having the oval, square and triangle shapes available!

I wanted to replicate the crackle effect I've seen on some gorgeous ceramic beads but of course with enamel! I had bought some crackle base a few years ago but never used it. Time to experiment! Unfortunately, there is not a lot of information on using it. I had the page from the Thompson enamel book but it was pretty technical information. I also was confused because you have to use liquid enamel over the crackle base but in some cases the liquid enamel was also called crackle enamel. I went ahead and cleaned my bead and sifted a coat of clear crackle base on it.

I fired the bead at 1470 degrees for three minutes. It came out looking like this.

The next step is to apply the liquid enamel over the crackle base. I only have white in the liquid enamel. First you have to add water and mix it well (there are good directions on the package) and then dip the bead in it.
I wouldn't say this is exactly what I had in mind but it's not bad either. The liquid enamel fires to a less glossy finish than regular enamel. More experimenting to come!! If you are reading this and laughing at my bead, please feel free to comment, I would truly love some advice on using crackle enamel!
Well, not exactly! I had a wonderful weekend spending time with my family but a warrior I was not. So I wanted to show you what I'm hoping to do some weekend in the future. Since my experiment enameling the iron filigree beads in my kiln had mixed results and the bead caps were a total disaster, I bought a Hot Head torch and a canister of MAPP gas. I already have the wonderful book Torch Fired Enameled Jewelry by Barbara Lewis so all I need to do is find the time where I can concentrate and experiment!

Corrugated Enameled Earring Components

I love the look of corrugated metal. It's modern and rustic both and very easy to achieve with my tube wringer. First I measured and cut 24 gauge sheet copper. I usually use 18 gauge copper for enameling but I needed a thinner gauge to put through the wringer and I didn't care if they warped a little in my kiln. I was going for the rustic look.

I wanted to finish enameling the filigree I blogged about earlier. I had these great roundelle shapes that I had already put on one coat of clear. I set my kiln temp at 1470 degrees and set about putting a layer of white. Then I started on the transparent layers. What a disaster!

The enamel started pinging off while the beads were in the kiln. What didn't pop off melted onto the mandrel and cracked off when I tried to remove the beads. I threw them all in the trash. I'm not sure what went wrong. I previously had good luck with opaque enamel and I had the kiln set lower so maybe that had something to do with it.

I am going to try again with the temp set at 1460 degrees and see what happens. I hate to give up, so stay tuned! Kiln Enameling Filigree Beads

I absolutely love the look of Barbara Lewis's torch fired filigree beads. I bought her book with the hope of adding a new enameling skill. But, according to the book, I don't have the right kind of torch. I have an acetylene/air set up which burns "dirtier" and causes the colors to be less vibrant. I didn't feel I should invest in another torch when I really haven't learned how to use the one I've got so I decided to try kiln enameling them. I think it was a very successful experiment!

I set the kiln at 1460 degress but I think the next time I will try it at 1470 degrees. I'm not used to the bumpy appearance. It's a little too rustic for me!

I used a first coat of clear which didn't seem to melt completely.

This has been an especially great summer for me! Not only am I on vacation for the summer, my adult children are living with us or near us and it's been wonderful to spend so much time with them. I get to stick my nose in their business and give them advice on every little thing. They're very grateful I'm sure. Now I am scrambling to make up for lost time at my kiln and fill my etsy shop to the brim. One of my clasps is going to be in the next issue of Stringing magazine in their Beads 2012 section and I'm hoping the exposure will bring me sales!
This is a picture of my acetylene/air torch set up. Do you want to know how long I have had it? Almost a year. And do you want to know how many times I've used it? That would be once! And I only managed to fire it up, I didn't actually make, melt, or solder anything with it. I am terrified of it. I can use a kiln and I love my small butane torch but this thing scares me to death. So one of goals (I love to make goals) this summer was to figure it out even if I blew myself up trying. I found the tutorial I had bookmarked last summer. I love the sub-title, "Conquer Your Fears and Commit to Your Craft." It's so serious and dramatic and artistic sounding. So I studied it and the instructions which came with the torch (which, naturally, were a bit different) and I got the torch lit and I melted some copper. I even enameled some silver headpins. I figure if I use it every day, I'll get used to using it and I can master soldering. I dream of putting some of my enamel work into bezels and taking my jewelry and supplies one step further. I admit I haven't completely conquered my fears but I'm working on it!
Now came the aggravating part. Some of the cords are a tiny bit larger than others. The next time I buy clasps, I will make sure I include some larger ones.
The silver tone one is magnetic. I love the rustic look to the copper ones. I used a tiny bit of 2-part epoxy to glue the leather cords securely. It's called 5 minute epoxy and they're not kidding. By the time I wrestled the cord into the clasp, the epoxy was too hard to use and I had to mix up a new batch. But the finished necklaces came out great!!

Mixed Metals Pendants

One of the problems with making merchandise to fill my ETSY supplies shop is that it doesn't give me time to just play and create finished jewelry. I've been working on these pendants forever or it seems like forever! I finally got them riveted together and I'm pretty excited with how they look. I wanted to try something a bit more rustic. I used my disc cutter to cut different sized circles out of copper, brass, nickel silver, and patinated metals from LillyPilly Designs. I hammered, stamped, and antiqued. I used pumice power, alcohol inks, and sealant. I riveted them together and added some wire wrapped copper. Then I wasn't sure what to do next. I had to stop myself from adding lots of beads and sparkle. Rustic, remember? So indulged my new love of leather and bought leather cords in many colors. I can go rustic but I can't give up color!

Leather and Enamels

I've always wanted to rivet my enameled components to leather to make bracelets. I thought the rough, rustic look of the leather would contrast nicely with my colorful, shiny enameled flowers. But I really can't afford to buy leather making tools and I certainly don't need another craft to focus on, so when I found these premade bracelet cuffs, I snapped some up.

The Mess

It finally occurred to me why I was having trouble being my usual warrior this past weekend. My studio was a HUGE mess. I couldn't do anything without moving a mountain of supplies and unfinished projects. There were beads, jars of enamel, and bits of metal everywhere. My bookcase is crammed with papers, receipts, books, pages ripped out of magazines....... get the picture? There is no reason for being unorganized because I have a whole room for my studio. I was so embarrassed for myself that I took some pictures. I figured if I blogged about it I would have to clean it. So I spent my weekend being a cleaning warrior. I hate cleaning so I wasn't an enthusiastic warrior. But, I made a good dent in it, enough to be able to finish some enameling projects. When my studio looks organized again I'll post the after pictures.

Making Balled Headpins

I sell a lot of hand made balled headpins in my shop. You could probably get them cheaper at Michaels, but by making them yourself (or buying them from my shop!) you get gorgeous shiny pins in the gauge you pick. First you need some argentium or regular sterling wire in 20, 22, or 24 gauge. The 20 gauge is heavier and may not be good for small hole beads but it's rich and professional looking. The 24 gauge is good for smaller holed beads or wrapped links and loops. The 24 gauge is good for pearls. Argentium sterling resists tarnishing and is great to work with.
My torch was purchased at Home Depot, was inexpensive and works great for melting silver. It doesn't get hot enough to melt copper.
To make a 1 1/4 inch headpin cut 1 3/4 in of 20 ga wire. Light your torch.

Hold the wire in the pliers. Put the end of the wire in the flame. The best spot is just outside of the dark blue inner flame. You can tell when the silver starts to melt by the orange flame shooting behind it. If you look at the picture below closely, I managed to capture this exactly!

the sweet spot

The wire will melt into a ball. I found that the slower you can lift the wire out of the flame, the nicer the ball looks. The smaller gauge wires will ball up quickly. If you leave the wire in the flame too long, the ball will just fall off. The wire will get dark and unattractive looking.
I clean my headpins with PennyBrite and then put them in my tumbler. I love my Lortone tumbler! It's a great tool for making your metals strong and shiny, I use mine all the time. If you don't have a tumbler, clean the headpins, polish them with silver polish or cloth and hammer them with a rubber mallet to work harden them. If you want paddle shaped headpins, just hammer the balls flat.
Because my day job at an elementary school is done for the summer, I didn't feel the need to spend the weekend in my studio churning out enameled pieces to keep my etsy supplies shop full. I was in complete summer relaxing mode and my warrior activities involved cooking, cleaning, and eating. I also did a lot of sitting on my patio admiring my hanging planters of flowers and watching the birds. It was wonderful!
Transparents Over Opaques

I haven't done much layering of transparent colors over opaque colors. Instead, I buy new colors to add to my enamel palette. I really need to experiment more! So I did a small experiment to share with you. I used three opaque colors on these toggle clasp blanks.

I was very grateful to spend the weekend working on custom orders but I did take the opportunity to experiment a bit with this bead. I wanted to add a darker blue to this bead which was already enameled with transparent medium and light blue.
I used too much fixative and it caused interesting patterns when I sifted on the dark blue so I added more drops on top of the power and let it dry.
